King Rehoboam consulted with the elders

on 2 Chronicles 10:6-9

Rehoboam consults two councils in turn, the elders “who had served his father Solomon” and “the young men who had grown up with him”. The text marks the shift as a choice: he “rejected the advice of the elders” before he asked the young men.

What message do you advise

With the elders Rehoboam asked how he himself should answer. With the young men he asks what answer the group should send, counting himself among them. Wesley thinks it probable that God, once Solomon had declined from Him, left Solomon to himself to lay so grievous a yoke.
