The young men who had grown up with him replied
on 2 Chronicles 10:10-11
The young men turn the petition into open threat, “My little finger is thicker than my father’s waist”. Where Solomon scourged with whips, Rehoboam will scourge “with scorpions”. The speakers are the men “who had grown up with him,” and the next verses show Rehoboam taking their words.

Each clause of the threat turns a word of the petition back heavier. Whips give way to scorpions, a harsher scourge. Clarke gives the Targum's reading of the boast in verse 10, that the weakness of Rehoboam would be stronger than the might of his father.
