King Rehoboam consulted with the elders

on 2 Chronicles 10:6-9

Rehoboam consults two councils in turn, the elders “who had served his father Solomon” and “the young men who had grown up with him”. The text marks the shift as a choice: he “rejected the advice of the elders” before he asked the young men.

The elders had stood before Solomon through his reign. Their counsel asked for kindness in word, and it promised lasting loyalty in return. Wesley comments on their advice that moderate counsels are generally best.
