1 Chronicles 19:1-2

Nahash's death and David's embassy of comfort to Hanun repeat 2 Samuel 10:1-2 almost word for word, and the Samuel exposition already carries the history behind Nahash's earlier kindness to David. Chronicles keeps the episode because it explains the war that follows rather than to add anything of its own to it. Kindness offered becomes kindness suspected, and in the next verses suspicion becomes the cause of a war neither side needed.

1 Chronicles 19:3-5

The princes' suspicion and the insult that follows track Samuel's account exactly: beards shaved and robes cut away leave David's servants publicly disgraced, since a shorn beard was a mark of shame through the ancient Near East. Adam Clarke notes the Targum's plainer reading of what the cutting exposed, the deliberate humiliation the princes intended by it. David spares his men the return march in that state, telling them to wait at Jericho until their beards are grown, mercy toward the injured party rather than an order to retaliate yet.

1 Chronicles 19:6-7

sent a thousand talents of silver: Where Samuel names Beth-rehob, Zoba, Ishtob and the king of Maacah as the hired allies, Chronicles names Mesopotamia and Zobah and adds a detail Samuel does not carry at all, the price: a thousand talents of silver for thirty and two thousand chariots. Albert Barnes flags the chariot count itself as textually difficult, since no ancient army of the period fielded a force that size, and suspects a word for horsemen has dropped out beside it. The Chronicler's fondness for numbers and sums, seen again in the temple accounts later in this book, shows even in a war chapter borrowed from Samuel.

1 Chronicles 19:8-9

David answers the hired coalition by sending Joab and all the host of the mighty men, while the Ammonites draw up before the gate of their own city and the hired kings take the field on their own. The arrangement splits Joab's problem in two, a walled enemy at his back and open cavalry in front, the same pincer 2 Samuel 10:8-9 describes. Chronicles states the danger plainly and lets the next verses show how Joab answers it.

1 Chronicles 19:10-13

Joab splits the army with his brother Abishai, each covering the other against whichever enemy proves stronger, and closes with a speech unlike anything else attributed to him: be of good courage, and let us behave ourselves valiantly for our people, and for the cities of our God, and let the Lord do that which is good in his sight. Jamieson, Fausset and Brown call it the faith and piety that became a commander of Israel, a striking word from a man Scripture elsewhere shows scheming against Abner and cutting down Amasa. The chapter carries no singers or prophetic oracle the way Jehoshaphat's war in 2 Chronicles 20 will; the outcome is still surrendered to the Lord's good pleasure before a sword is drawn.

1 Chronicles 19:14-15

Joab advances and the Syrian mercenaries break first; seeing their hired strength gone, the Ammonites likewise flee, back into the city they had marched out of. Joab does not press the siege but returns to Jerusalem, leaving the city standing for the second campaign 1 Chronicles 20:1 will open. The rout matches 2 Samuel 10:13-14 without variation; Chronicles adds nothing here beyond the bare report.

1 Chronicles 19:16-18

Defeat does not end the war for Hadarezer's Syrians; they summon reinforcements from beyond the Euphrates under Shophach, and David himself crosses Jordan to meet them, the king now taking the field he had left to Joab in the first battle. The second rout is total and Shophach dies with it; Chronicles counts seven thousand men fighting from chariots where 2 Samuel 10:18 counts seven hundred chariots, a discrepancy Jamieson, Fausset and Brown note without settling, some combining the two counts and others treating one text as corrupted. The two numbers stand as they were transmitted, neither preferred over the other.

1 Chronicles 19:19

The Syrian kings make peace and become David's servants, closing the foreign half of the war so that Ammon alone is left, still unbroken behind its city walls. Chronicles moves directly from this peace into 1 Chronicles 20:1's siege of that city, passing over without a trace what 2 Samuel 11-12 tells across the same span of time: David remaining at Jerusalem, the affair with Bathsheba, and Uriah's death. The omission matches the Chronicler's practice through the rest of the reign, the same selection that leaves out Absalom's revolt, and this chapter's quiet ending is where that silence begins.
