on 1 Chronicles 19:14-15
Joab advances and the Syrian mercenaries break first; seeing their hired strength gone, the Ammonites likewise flee. Joab does not press the siege but returns to Jerusalem, leaving the city standing for the second campaign 1 Chronicles 20:1 will open. The rout matches 2 Samuel 10:13-14 without variation.

Joab's address before the engagement displays the faith and piety that became a commander of the Hebrew people. The mercenaries being defeated, the courage of the Ammonites failed; so that, taking flight, they entrenched themselves within the fortified walls.
