Joab divides the army with his brother Abishai, each ready to rescue the other. He leaves the outcome to the LORD: “May the LORD do what is good in His sight”. These words, unlike any others given to him, come from the man who elsewhere kills Abner and Amasa.

Joab's charge has two parts, courage and trust. The men are to fight for their people and for the cities of their God, and the result is left to the LORD. Jamieson, Fausset and Brown record the rout that follows at verse 18, with seven thousand men slain.
