on 1 Chronicles 19:8-9
The Ammonites draw up “at the entrance to the city”, and the hired kings take the field on their own. The arrangement splits Joab's problem in two, a walled enemy at his back and open cavalry in front, the same pincer 2 Samuel 10:8-9 describes.

The Ammonites hold the entrance to their own city, and the hired kings wait apart in the open country. Joab is caught between them, as verse 10 shows. Jamieson, Fausset and Brown note that the hired riders could fight on horse, in chariots or on foot.

Joab's address before the engagement displays the faith and piety that became a commander of the Hebrew people. The mercenaries being defeated, the courage of the Ammonites failed; so that, taking flight, they entrenched themselves within the fortified walls.
