they sent messengers to bring more Arameans

on 1 Chronicles 19:16-18

Defeat drives Hadadezer's Arameans to bring more troops “from beyond the Euphrates”, led by Shophach. David himself “crossed the Jordan” to meet them. Chronicles counts “seven thousand of their charioteers” where 2 Sam 10:18 counts seven hundred, and Jamieson, Fausset and Brown note the difference without settling it.

David now takes the field himself after Joab led the first battle. He gathers all Israel and crosses the Jordan to meet the Arameans brought from beyond the Euphrates in verse 16. Jamieson, Fausset and Brown count its dead at verse 18.
