Joab divides the army with his brother Abishai, each ready to rescue the other. He leaves the outcome to the LORD: “May the LORD do what is good in His sight”. These words, unlike any others given to him, come from the man who elsewhere kills Abner and Amasa.

Joab and Abishai agree to rescue each other. The Arameans are the hired force of verse 7, and the Ammonites hold the city gate. Jamieson, Fausset and Brown count those hired riders as able to fight on horse or in chariots.

Joab's address before the engagement displays the faith and piety that became a commander of the Hebrew people. The mercenaries being defeated, the courage of the Ammonites failed; so that, taking flight, they entrenched themselves within the fortified walls.
