1 Chronicles 17:1-3

Chronicles opens the scene without Samuel's notice that the LORD had first given David rest from all his enemies round about, 2 Sam 7:1. It moves straight from the house of cedars to the ark under curtains, keeping the chapter's attention on the sanctuary rather than on David's military peace. Nathan answers David the same day on his own judgment, and the LORD corrects him that same night, exactly as in Samuel, and the Samuel exposition already carries the weight of a true prophet revising his own instinct under a fresh word.

1 Chronicles 17:4-6

The refusal repeats Samuel's oracle nearly word for word, thou shalt not build me an house to dwell in, and the Samuel exposition carries its full sense. One word differs at verse 6: where 2 Sam 7:7 has the LORD asking any of the tribes of Israel, Chronicles has any of the judges of Israel, a variant the bench reads as either an old scribal shift between two similar Hebrew words or a deliberate narrowing to the period's rulers rather than its clans. Either way the point stands unchanged, that the LORD never asked a house of any leader across the whole span from the wilderness to David.

1 Chronicles 17:7-10

The reversal from shepherd to ruler and the promise of a planted, undisturbed people match 2 Sam 7:8-11 closely, and the Samuel exposition already carries this shepherd-boy movement in full. One clause turns forward instead of back: Samuel's I have caused thee to rest from all thine enemies, 2 Sam 7:11, becomes Chronicles' I will subdue all thine enemies, a promise still open rather than a rest already given. A book written for a remnant with no standing army and no settled peace keeps the subduing future rather than past.

1 Chronicles 17:11-13

The seed, the kingdom and the throne established for ever restate 2 Sam 7:12-13, and the New Testament's use of the promise, first for Solomon and beyond him at Hebrews 1:5 and Luke 1:32-33, belongs to the Samuel exposition. One clause is missing: Samuel's warning that this son, if he commit iniquity, will be chastened with the rod of men, 2 Sam 7:14, does not appear in Chronicles, and Barnes reads the cut as the Chronicler's method at work across the whole book, since Chronicles never narrates Solomon's fall into idolatry that 1 Kings 11 records. The mercy that will not depart stands here without the warning that, in Samuel, stands beside it.

1 Chronicles 17:14-15

Here the two accounts part pronouns rather than words. Samuel's oracle closes thine house and thy kingdom shall be established for ever before thee, 2 Sam 7:16, David's own dynasty in David's own right; Chronicles has I will settle him in mine house and in my kingdom for ever, the throne turned explicitly into the LORD's own. Jamieson, Fausset and Brown read the change as the Chronicler stating outright, at the moment of the promise itself, what 28:5 and 29:23 will later say of Solomon in so many words, that he sits on the throne of the kingdom of the LORD. Nathan carries the whole vision back to David exactly as he received it, verse 15 closing the oracle before the king's prayer opens.

1 Chronicles 17:16-17

Who am I, O Lord God: David's prayer opens on a question, Who am I, O Lord God, and what is mine house, matching 2 Sam 7:18 almost without variation, and the Samuel exposition already carries this opening as the shape faith takes when offered a promise too large to have asked for. Verse 17 keeps the same wonder, a small thing in thine eyes, and adds that God has regarded him according to the estate of a man of high degree, Barnes reading the phrase as David set above other men though he has no natural claim to that rank.

1 Chronicles 17:18-19

The prayer's grounding shifts in one word. Samuel closes this movement for thy word's sake, 2 Sam 7:21, the oracle already spoken standing as its own guarantee; Chronicles has for thy servant's sake, and Matthew Henry marks the difference by name, reading it as the same mercy now argued from the servant the LORD chose rather than only from the word the LORD spoke. Both grounds meet in the one greatness David says he cannot add to, thou knowest thy servant.

1 Chronicles 17:20-22

Praise widens from David's own house to the nature of God himself, there is none like thee, neither is there any God beside thee, matching 2 Sam 7:22-24 closely enough that the Samuel exposition carries its full argument. What one nation in the earth is like thy people Israel binds the personal covenant just given to the national redemption from Egypt in the same breath, so that David's house is defended by appeal to the whole story the book has already told of God's people.

1 Chronicles 17:23-25

The prayer's petitions, let the thing that thou hast spoken be established, and its confession, thou hast told thy servant that thou wilt build him an house, restate 2 Sam 7:25-27 with only small changes of address, and the Samuel exposition already carries the argument in full. Verse 25 closes on found in his heart to pray, which the Targum reads as an opening of the mouth to pray, a man given permission to ask because he has first been given the promise.

1 Chronicles 17:26-27

The chapter's last words change the whole mood of the closing line Samuel and Chronicles share. Samuel ends on a request, with thy blessing let the house of thy servant be blessed for ever, 2 Sam 7:29; Chronicles ends on a statement of settled faith, for thou blessest, O Lord, and it shall be blessed for ever, and Matthew Henry names the difference directly, calling the Samuel line a holy desire and the Chronicles line a most holy faith. What the king asked for at the start of the prayer he declares as already true by its end.
