The words, "I put the leprosy," has led many to think that this plague was a judicial infliction from heaven for the sins of the owner; while others do not regard it in this light, it being common in Scripture to represent God as doing that which He only permits in His providence to be done.

The vocabulary of the man's case is now applied to masonry. Spreading mildew means the stones are pulled out and the house scraped and replastered, a repair no man in chapter 13 was offered.

The camp of verse 3 has become a city, since this law looks forward to settled life in Canaan. Only the affected stones go at this stage. Matthew Henry compares it to cutting off a gangrened limb to save the rest of the body.
