The older commentators take the name Enosh to mean mortal or frail man. Kenan carries a name close to Cain's, and the two family lists share name after name: Enoch and Lamech stand in both, Methuselah beside Methusael. Gill notes the overlap and leaves it standing.

Counted by the Hebrew numbers from creation, Enosh died in the year 1140, when Noah was 84. A grandson of Adam was still living in Noah's lifetime. Matthew Henry reckoned the flood year the same way, at 1656 years from the creation.
