When they reached their father Jacob in the land of Canaan

on Genesis 42:29-34

The report they give Jacob follows the meeting closely, with one thing left out and one thing added. They leave out what they had said, that they were being punished for their brother. John Gill notes that the trade in the land was never offered them, and they add it.

This is how I will know whether you are honest

The report keeps the ruler's words about food for hungry households, the one kindness of the meeting. It leaves out the three days in custody and the binding of Simeon before their eyes. Jacob learns of Simeon only as a term of the deal.
