All brethren by the father's side, though not by the mother's, and by one father; they had been twelve, and were so now, though they knew it not, supposing that one was dead, as is next observed: one is not; is not alive, but dead; the Targum of Jonathan is,"what is become of one we know not" and the youngest is this day with our father in the land of Canaan; see Gen 42:13.

The report they give Jacob follows the meeting closely, with one thing left out and one thing added. They leave out what they had said, that they were being punished for their brother. John Gill notes that the trade in the land was never offered them, and they add it.

Twelve is still the count they give, with Joseph included as the one who is no more. The number of the tribes of 49:28 stands whole in their mouths while the family is broken. Jacob hears his lost son counted again.
