on Genesis 5:15-20

Mahalalel is the fifth from Adam, Jared the sixth, and Enoch the seventh. Jude 14 names Enoch the seventh from Adam when he quotes his prophecy. The seventh from Adam in Cain's line is the other Lamech, who boasts at Genesis 4:23 of a man he killed.

This site's exposition

a total of 895 years

Mahalalel died at 895, the first man in the list to fall short of 900 years. Of later fathers, only Enoch and Lamech had fewer years. Matthew Henry held that these men found long life light to carry.

And all the days of Mahalaleel were eight hundred ninety and five years, and he died. He also is spoken well of by the Arabic writers (p) as a good governor, a pious man that walked in the way of righteousness; and when he died blessed his children, and adjured them by the blood of Abel, not to suffer any of theirs to descend from the mountain to the sons of Cain: according to Bishop Usher he died A. M. 1290. (p) Elmacinus, & Patricides in ib. p. 234.
