Jacob told Rachel, &c.--According to the practice of the East, the term "brother" is extended to remote degrees of relationship, as uncle, cousin, or nephew.

Jacob tells Rachel that he is Rebekah's son, a relative of her father. She runs and tells him. Laban runs out to meet him, embraces him, and brings him home. In chapter 24 Laban ran out to a servant who had ten camels and gold, and Jacob comes with nothing.

It was plain that it was his passion for Rachel, and the surprise of this happy meeting, that drew these tears from his eyes. Laban, though none of the best-humoured men, bade him welcome, was satisfied in the account he gave of himself, and of the reason of his coming in such poor circumstances.
