Bethuel the Syrian - Literally the Aramean, so called, not because he was of the race of Aram the son of Shem, but because he dwelt in that country which had been formerly possessed by the descendants of Aram.

on Genesis 28:5-7

Verse 5 names Rebekah as the mother of Jacob and Esau, the younger son first. Verse 7 says Jacob had obeyed his father and mother, said of the son who had deceived them both one chapter earlier. Isaac sends him on to Laban son of Bethuel the Aramean, Rebekah's brother. The road out of Canaan is his father's own command.
