That is, from the front of the inner eastern gate before mentioned, Eze 40:7, called the lower gate, in respect of the gate opposite to it, which led into the inner court, to which there was an ascent of eight steps; and which the Targum calls the middle gate, because it lay between the eastern outward gate, and the gate of the inward court.

In the outer court a pavement runs all around, and thirty chambers face it. The guide measures from the lower gateway to the outside of the inner court, a hundred cubits on the east as on the north. Fairbairn notes that this hundred-cubit measure recurs through the whole complex.

A hundred cubits, about 170 feet, separates the outer gate from the inner gate. John Gill calls it the lower gate because the gate opposite it, leading to the inner court, stands eight steps higher. Verses 23 and 27 repeat the distance.

In these words, if we understand the gate as the entrance by which we enter into the knowledge of the Lord, the lower gate is faith, while the inner court is contemplation. Moreover, the lower gate has width in its face, because clearly faith through the amplitude of its charity has that operation which is seen by neighbors. When we observe this being carried out strongly by those who are more perfect, we who are constrained in good actions receive through them examples of great operation.

East-ward and north-ward - And so was the space from the south front of the court to the north front. So the court was exactly square. Divers courts are here spoken of, which may put us in mind, of the diversity of gifts, graces and offices in the church: as also of the several degrees of glory in the courts and mansions of heaven.
