The cup figure returns from the shared sentence of verse 31, deep and large, filled with drunkenness and sorrow, the same cup of astonishment and desolation Samaria already drank. Barnes reads the physical detail of verse 34, breaking the shards and tearing at her own breasts, as grief turned inward once judgment lands, self-inflicted mourning replacing the self-adornment of the chapter's earlier verses. Henry notes the reason is stated once more before the chapter moves on, because thou hast forgotten me, and cast me behind thy back, the same forgetting named as the root of chapter 16's harlotry now closing this one.
