Thus . . . make . . . lewdness to cease--The captivity has made the Jews ever since abhor idolatry, not only on their return from Babylon, but for the last eighteen centuries of their dispersion, as foretold (Ho 3:4).

I will raise up thy lovers against thee
on Ezekiel 23:22-27
The Lord raises up Jerusalem's own former lovers, the Babylonians and their allies. Keil reads the mutilation named at verse 25 against known penalties for adultery in the surrounding cultures. Fairbairn notes the stripping of clothes and jewels at verse 26 answers the ornaments the Lord gave in chapter 16.

Egypt stands at both ends of the story, where the prostitution began in verse 3 and where Jerusalem looked for help at the last. The exile ends that path. The captivity became the lasting end of the nation's idolatry, as Jamieson, Fausset and Brown observed.
