4 notes on this verseAnd the fourth row a beryl, and an onyx, and a jasper,.... Whatever stone is meant by the first in this row, it must be of a sea green colour; for "tarshish", the word used, signifies the sea; and so the beryl, as Pliny (r) says, imitates the greenness of the pure sea.

Twelve stones in four rows carry the twelve names, one to a stone, “each engraved like a seal”. The shoulder stones grouped the names six and six, while here every tribe has its own stone. Revelation 21:14 and 21:19 give the city wall twelve foundation stones bearing the apostles' names.
