The Syrians had fled probably by the great road which led from Samaria to Damascus through Geba, En-gannim, Beth-shean, and Aphek. It crosses the Jordan at the Jisr Mejamia, about thirty-five miles northeast of Samaria.

One servant proposes a modest test, send five of the horses that are left, since they will die of the famine soon enough whether they go or stay. Only two chariot horses can be found fit to send, a detail that measures how far the siege has stripped the city's own strength. The riders follow the road toward Jordan and find it strewn the whole way with garments and vessels the Syrians threw off in their haste, proof the king could see for himself before a single soldier was put at risk.
