The king sets the scoffing officer over the gate, and the hungry crowd tramples him there on its way to the food. He sees the plenty with his own eyes and eats none of it, “just as the man of God had foretold”.

John Wesley reads the officer's death as the weight God puts on distrust of His power, His providence and His promise. The king had set him over the gate at verse 17. He died there in the crush.
