Please pretend to be a mourner

on 2 Samuel 14:2-3

Joab sends to Tekoa for a wise woman and tells her, “Please pretend to be a mourner”. She is to wear mourning clothes, use no oil, and act like one who has “mourned for the dead a long time”. Then “Joab put the words in her mouth”.

Albert Barnes notes that the king sat as judge and any subject could bring a case, as the two women do at 1 Kings 3:16. Joab's plan depends on that open door. Absalom will use the same access to win hearts at 15:2.

And Joab sent to Tekoah, and fetched thence a wise woman--The king was strongly attached to Absalom; and having now got over his sorrow for the violent death of Amnon, he was desirous of again enjoying the society of his favorite son, who had now been three long years absent.
Come to the king - The king as a judge was accessible to all his subjects (2Sa 15:2; compare 1Ki 3:16).
