Forasmuch as thou hast disobeyed the mouth of the Lord - It was his duty not to have suffered himself to be persuaded. He should have felt that his obedience was being tried, and should have required, ere he considered himself released, “the same, or as strong, evidence,” as that on which he had received the obligation. Disobedience to certain positive commands of God, was one which it was at this time very important to punish signally, since it was exactly the sin of Jeroboam and his adherents.

While the two men sit at the meal that broke the charge, the word of the Lord comes on the old prophet, and the sentence he speaks against his guest is the same word he had just contradicted in his own mouth. Keil and the bench read the case as obedience to a direct, personal word admitting no second revision, even one claiming a fresh angelic message, so the man of God is judged for trusting a report over the command he already had. The false prophet who lied speaks true judgment in the same breath, and the text names the irony without resolving it.

Albert Barnes notes that the man of God broke a plain command of God, the same sin Jeroboam committed with his calves and his feast. The judgment on him puts that sin before all Bethel. Matthew Henry names it in one word, disobedience.

Judgment is given upon it: Thy carcase shall not come to the sepulchre of thy fathers, that is, "Thou shalt never reach thy own house, but shalt be a carcase quickly, nor shall thy dead body be brought to the place of thy fathers' sepulchres, to be interred." 2.

(2.) To put the greater mortification upon the prophet that was deceived, and to show what those must expect who hearken to the great deceiver. Those that yield to him as a tempter will be terrified by him as a tormentor; whom he now fawns upon he will afterwards fly upon, and whom he now draws into sin he will do what he can to drive to despair.
