The chapter's last words change the whole mood of the closing line Samuel and Chronicles share. Samuel ends on a request, with thy blessing let the house of thy servant be blessed for ever, 2 Sam 7:29; Chronicles ends on a statement of settled faith, for thou blessest, O Lord, and it shall be blessed for ever, and Matthew Henry names the difference directly, calling the Samuel line a holy desire and the Chronicles line a most holy faith. What the king asked for at the start of the prayer he declares as already true by its end.

Blessed forever - David's prayer concludes, as God's promise did, ver. 14, with that which is forever. God's word looks at things eternal. And so should our desires and hopes.

He was encouraged to beg a blessing because God had intimated to him that he had blessings in store for him and his family: " Thou blessest, O Lord! and therefore unto thee shall all flesh come for a blessing; unto thee do I come for the blessing promised to me."
