Young and tender - The exact age of Solomon at this time is uncertain; but it cannot have been more than 24 or 25. It may have been as little as 14 or 15. Compare the 1Ki 2:2 note.

Solomon is “young and inexperienced, and the house to be built for the LORD must be exceedingly magnificent”, so the father will do the preparing. Barnes reckons Solomon's age as low as fourteen or fifteen and no higher than twenty-four or twenty-five, a range the text itself leaves open.
