David tells Solomon that “it was in my heart to build a house for the Name of the LORD my God”. Verse 8 states it directly: “You have shed much blood and waged great wars”. Chronicles alone has David repeat the word of the LORD as a settled verdict.

David calls Solomon his son and tells him he wished to build a house for the LORD's Name. John Gill ties the promise in verse 10 to 2 Samuel 7:13, where the same wish first came before God. Verse 8 gives the LORD's reason for refusing him.
