Angels

Angels appear so often in Scripture that it's easy to walk past them. But every time one shows up, something big is happening. God is about to speak, protect, warn, or announce.

The word itself just means "messenger." That's their main job — carrying God's word to people (Luke 1:26-28). But Scripture shows them doing much more: guarding, fighting, worshiping, and even eating a meal with Abraham (Genesis 18:1-8).

The first angels named in the Bible guard the way back into Eden after Adam and Eve are sent out (Genesis 3:24). From the very beginning, angels stand at the border between God's presence and a fallen world.

Later, an angel stops Abraham's hand as he raises the knife over Isaac (Genesis 22:11-12). An angel wrestles with Jacob all night at the Jabbok river until Jacob refuses to let go without a blessing (Genesis 32:24-30; Hosea 12:4 confirms it was an angel). Jacob walks away limping — and renamed.

When Joshua stands outside Jericho, he meets "the commander of the LORD's army," an angelic figure so holy that Joshua takes off his sandals (Joshua 5:13-15). This is no ordinary messenger. Some readers believe appearances like this are the pre-incarnate Son of God showing himself in angelic form.

Angels rescue. One shuts the mouths of lions around Daniel all night (Daniel 6:22). One frees Peter from a guarded prison cell, and Peter thinks he's dreaming (Acts 12:6-11). The psalmist promises that God gives his angels charge over those who trust him, to keep them in all their ways (Psalm 91:11).

Angels also fight. Michael, called an archangel, is described as the one who contends for God's people against dark spiritual powers (Daniel 10:13; Jude 1:9). In Revelation, Michael and his angels go to war against the dragon and throw him down (Revelation 12:7-9). The Bible does not treat angels as decoration. It treats them as soldiers in a real conflict.

The most famous angel appearances cluster around Jesus. Gabriel tells Mary she will bear the Son of God (Luke 1:26-38). An angel tells Joseph not to be afraid to take Mary as his wife (Matthew 1:20-21). On the night Jesus is born, a whole multitude of the heavenly host suddenly fills the sky over Bethlehem, praising God (Luke 2:13-14). When Jesus is arrested, he tells Peter he could call down twelve legions of angels to rescue him — and doesn't (Matthew 26:53). At the empty tomb, it's an angel who tells the women that Jesus is risen (Matthew 28:2-6).

That detail matters. Angels announce the beginning of Jesus' life and the turning point of history — his resurrection. They are witnesses to the gospel from start to finish, but they never take the spotlight. They point away from themselves and toward Christ every time.

Hebrews calls angels "ministering spirits, sent forth to minister for them who shall be heirs of salvation" (Hebrews 1:14). Part of an angel's job is to serve the people God is saving. Hebrews also gives a strange little warning: some who showed hospitality to strangers turned out to have entertained angels without knowing it (Hebrews 13:2).

Angels are never to be worshiped — Scripture is firm about that (Revelation 22:8-9; Colossians 2:18). They are creatures, not gods, however dazzling their appearances. Their whole purpose bends toward glorifying the One who made them and toward serving the people Christ came to save. When the curtain of heaven pulls back even slightly in Scripture, angels are usually standing there — pointing, always, past themselves to God.
