The enemy

The Bible names a real enemy — a personal being who opposes God and works against his people. Scripture calls him by many names: the serpent, the devil, Satan, the accuser, the adversary, the dragon. Different names, but one enemy, and his story runs from the garden of Eden to the final pages of Revelation.

He first appears in Genesis, not as a monster but as a serpent, more subtle than any other creature God had made (Genesis 3:1). He did not attack directly. He asked a question that cast doubt on what God had said, then twisted it into a lie. That is still his method — not open assault so much as quiet deception, making evil look reasonable and God's word look uncertain.

Even in that first meeting, God promised the enemy would not win in the end. He told the serpent that the seed of the woman would crush his head, though the serpent would wound his heel (Genesis 3:15). That promise, given in the middle of humanity's first failure, points forward to Christ. Every battle with the enemy in Scripture after this is really one long unfolding of that one promise.

The Old Testament shows this enemy at work in specific scenes. In the book of Job, he appears among the sons of God, asking permission to test Job, and God allows it within limits (Job 1:6-12). In Zechariah, he stands at the right hand of the high priest Joshua to accuse him, and the Lord rebukes him directly (Zechariah 3:1-2). He is real, active, and always opposed by God himself.

Jesus spoke about him plainly. He described people whose actions revealed they were following the desires of the devil, calling him a liar and a murderer from the beginning, with no truth in him at all (John 8:44). Jesus also faced him directly in the wilderness, refusing every temptation with the word of God (Matthew 4:1-11). After his ministry began to bear fruit, Jesus told his disciples he had seen Satan fall like lightning from heaven (Luke 10:18) — a glimpse of the defeat that was already underway.

The apostles took the enemy seriously without being afraid of him. Paul told believers that their struggle was not against people, but against spiritual powers and authorities in the unseen realm (Ephesians 6:12). Peter warned that the devil goes about like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour, and told believers to be alert and to resist him, standing firm in the faith (1 Peter 5:8-9).

The last book of the Bible shows how this long war ends. The dragon — described as that old serpent, the devil and Satan — is cast down and eventually thrown into the lake of fire forever (Revelation 12:9; 20:10). The enemy who deceived the whole world does not get the final word.

None of this is meant to make a person live in fear. It is meant to do the opposite. Scripture describes a real enemy so that believers are not caught off guard, but it always shows him defeated, limited, and already judged by what Christ did on the cross and in the resurrection. The war is real, but so is the outcome — and it was decided at Calvary, not in some future battle still to come.
