Luke5chapter 5

Luke 5:1-3

As the people pressed upon him to hear the word of God, he stood by the lake of Gennesaret, Luke's own name for the Sea of Galilee, and used it as his platform when the crowd made the shore itself impossible to preach from. He entered into one of the ships, which was Simon's, and prayed him that he would thrust out a little from the land, a small request that turns Peter's boat into a pulpit and Peter himself into an unwitting first hearer of a private lesson still to come. The bench notes the ordinary courtesy Jesus asks rather than commands, the water's natural acoustics carrying his voice back to a crowd gathered on a sloped shore, a fisherman's boat pressed into service for the word before it is pressed into service for the catch.

Luke 5:4-7

Launch out into the deep, and let down your nets for a draught, Jesus tells a professional fisherman how to fish, and Simon's answer holds both a professional's fatigue and a disciple's obedience in the same breath, Master, we have toiled all the night, and have taken nothing, nevertheless at thy word I will let down the net. The catch is so great the net brake and both ships began to sink, Luke's physical detail making plain this was no lucky cast but an unmistakable sign, since deep water fishing by daylight after a fruitless night ran against every fisherman's own instinct on that lake. The bench reads Simon's nevertheless as the pivot of the whole scene, obedience resting on the word rather than on the odds, a pattern the disciples will need again long before this Gospel ends.

Luke 5:8-10

Simon Peter fell down at Jesus' knees, depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord, the miracle exposing not merely Jesus' power but Peter's own unworthiness before it, the ordinary reflex of holiness met at close range. Astonishment holds James and John too, partners with Simon, and Luke's word for the catch, the draught of the fishes which they had taken, makes clear the whole crew shared one overwhelming morning. Jesus answers the confession of sin with a call rather than a dismissal, fear not, from henceforth thou shalt catch men, the fisherman's own trade turned into the shape of the calling, the astonishing catch of fish becoming the pattern for an even larger catch of souls.

Luke 5:11

When they had brought their ships to land, they forsook all, and followed him, Luke's summary verse for the calling of the first disciples, and the timing matters, this was very likely their most profitable catch on record, abandoned at its height rather than after a season of failure. The bench reads the all as total, boats, nets, and the business itself left behind, a costly obedience made no easier by anything in the circumstances, since nothing about that catch argued for leaving it. John's Gospel already records earlier meetings between these men and Jesus, and the bench holds that this scene marks their decisive, settled call to constant discipleship rather than a first introduction.

Luke 5:12-13

A man full of leprosy, Luke's clinical phrase for a case advanced past any hope of natural cure, falls on his face with a request that names the real question, Lord, if thou wilt, thou canst make me clean, doubting not the power but the willingness. Jesus put forth his hand, and touched him, the touch itself an act of compassion crossing a boundary the law had drawn to protect the community from contagion and defilement, and I will, be thou clean answers the man's own wording exactly, will met with will. The bench notes the leprosy departed immediately, and the touch that should have made Jesus unclean by the law instead makes the leper clean, holiness proving stronger than contagion when the two meet in his hand.

Luke 5:14

He charged him to tell no man, but go, and shew thyself to the priest, and offer for thy cleansing, according as Moses commanded, obedience to Leviticus 14's ritual still binding even on a healing the law itself did not anticipate. For a testimony unto them names the purpose plainly, the priesthood receiving evidence that would either confirm or resist the claims already spreading about Jesus, decided by their own examination rather than by rumor. The bench reads the charge to silence as part of the same pattern already seen with the demons in the previous chapter, Jesus controlling the terms of his own disclosure even while working works no one could conceal for long.

Luke 5:15-16

So much the more went there a fame abroad of him, the silence he asked of the leper doing nothing to slow what his own works were already announcing, and great multitudes came together to hear, and to be healed of their infirmities, both purposes named together, the word and the healing drawing the same crowd. He withdrew himself into the wilderness, and prayed, Luke's recurring notice of Jesus at prayer, here placed exactly where the pressure of growing fame might have tempted a lesser man to feed on it. The bench reads the withdrawal as the pattern for the whole ministry, popularity met with retreat to the Father rather than with either flight from the crowds or surrender to their demands.

Luke 5:17-19

Pharisees and doctors of the law sitting by, come out of every town of Galilee, and Judea, and Jerusalem, Luke's careful notice that this was no local audience but official observers gathered from the whole region, and the power of the Lord was present to heal them, present specifically for healing rather than merely for teaching. A man taken with a palsy is carried by friends who could not find a way through the crowd and so went upon the housetop, opening the tiling and lowering him through the roof into the midst before Jesus, a flat Judean roof reached by an outside stair making the improvised entrance plausible rather than fantastic. The bench reads their persistence as the faith Jesus is about to commend, ingenuity and effort spent entirely on behalf of a man who could not act for himself.

Luke 5:20

their faith: When he saw their faith, the friends' faith counted alongside, or even in place of, the paralyzed man's own, since Luke names no faith the man himself expresses, only the effort spent to bring him. Man, thy sins are forgiven thee, an answer to a need no one had voiced aloud, since the men had brought him for healing, not for absolution, and Jesus goes to the deeper wound first. The bench notes this is the same authority question the previous chapter raised with the demons, an announcement no ordinary teacher had standing to make, setting up the dispute the next verses record.

Luke 5:21-24

Who can forgive sins, but God alone: The scribes and Pharisees reason within themselves, who is this which speaketh blasphemies, who can forgive sins, but God alone, and their theology is exactly correct, only God forgives sins, which is precisely the claim Jesus makes about himself in the previous verse. He perceives their thoughts, itself a further claim only God could rightly make of a man's inward reasoning, and puts the harder question plainly, whether is easier, to say, thy sins be forgiven thee, or to say, rise up and walk, a claim no one can verify set beside a claim everyone can. That ye may know that the Son of man hath power upon earth to forgive sins, he says, and turns to the sick man, arise, and take up thy couch, and go into thine house, the visible healing offered as evidence for the invisible pardon, the miracle made to answer the theological question directly.

Luke 5:25-26

Immediately he rose up before them, and took up that whereon he lay, and departed to his own house, glorifying God, the healed man's own response modeling what the miracle was meant to produce, praise rather than mere relief. They were all amazed, and glorified God, and were filled with fear, saying, we have seen strange things to day, the crowd's today echoing the today of Nazareth's synagogue in the previous chapter, the present tense in which this Gospel keeps locating salvation. The bench notes fear and glory held together in one crowd's reaction, the proper response to a work that proved a claim about forgiveness no one present had standing to make for himself.

Luke 5:27-28

He saw a publican, named Levi, sitting at the receipt of custom, a tax collector at his booth, a trade Jewish society counted among the lowest for its collaboration with Rome and its routine extortion, and the call is as brief as it was to the fishermen, follow me. He left all, rose up, and followed him, Luke's same word for total abandonment already used of Simon, James, and John, a tax booth left behind as completely as a fishing business. The bench notes Levi is Matthew, the same man whose own Gospel names him plainly among the twelve, a tax collector's precise habits perhaps explaining why his Gospel alone preserves so much teaching arranged in structured blocks.

Luke 5:29-32

Levi made him a great feast in his own house, and there was a great company of publicans and of others that sat down with them, the new disciple's first act an invitation, bringing his old circle to meet the one who called him rather than abandoning them for respectable company. The scribes and Pharisees murmured, why do ye eat and drink with publicans and sinners, table fellowship in that culture a declaration of acceptance, which is exactly what scandalized the critics watching from outside. Jesus answers with a physician's own logic, they that are whole need not a physician, but they that are sick, I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance, the meal itself becoming the sermon, since a doctor is found where the sick are, not where health is already assumed.

Luke 5:33-35

Why do the disciples of John fast often, and make prayers, and likewise the disciples of the Pharisees, but thine eat and drink, the question comparing two recognized patterns of piety against what looked like laxity among Jesus' own followers. Can ye make the children of the bridechamber fast, while the bridegroom is with them, Jesus answers, borrowing the wedding imagery of the Hebrew Scriptures where God himself is Israel's bridegroom, a claim as bold as anything said about forgiving sins, only phrased as a wedding rather than a courtroom. The days will come, when the bridegroom shall be taken away from them, and then shall they fast in those days, a plain prediction of his own death worked into a saying about feasting, fasting rightly following loss rather than substituting for joy while the bridegroom remains.

Luke 5:36-39

No man putteth a piece of a new garment upon an old, and no man putteth new wine into old bottles, twin parables making the same point from cloth and from wineskins, new material tears an old garment further and new wine, still fermenting, bursts a skin already stretched and brittle from earlier use. The old system of fasting and the new reality Jesus brings are not compatible patches on one another, new wine must be put into new bottles, and both are preserved, the gospel requiring its own new forms rather than being squeezed into forms built for something else. No man also having drunk old wine straightway desireth new, for he saith, the old is better, closes the chapter with a warning rather than a triumph, the very familiarity of the old ways making some hearers slow to receive what is genuinely better, a line the bench reads as gently aimed at the Pharisees who had just been arguing.
