John 3:1-2

Nicodemus is a Pharisee and a member of the Sanhedrin, one of the ruling council, and his coming by night has drawn two readings the bench holds together rather than choosing between, ordinary caution against being seen with a controversial teacher and the Gospel's own habit of using darkness and light as more than weather. His opening words already outrun the crowd of 2:23, we know that thou art a teacher come from God, an honest confession built from the miracles alone, though the conversation that follows shows him a beginner in the very kingdom he has come to ask about.

John 3:3

Jesus answers a question Nicodemus has not yet asked, cutting past the compliment straight to the one thing that matters, and the Greek anothen carries a deliberate double sense the bench keeps rather than resolves, again in time and from above in source, both readings sitting inside the single word and both true of the new birth the sentence describes. Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God states the requirement as absolute, no exception for a ruler's learning or a Pharisee's law-keeping, and the verse answers the passive new birth of 1:13 with a command now laid on every hearer.

John 3:4

be born when he is old: Nicodemus hears the word in only its first sense, and his question is not mockery but the honest confusion of a literalist facing a figure he has never met, how can a man enter again into his mother's womb. The bench reads his failure as instructive rather than foolish: a master of Israel, fluent in the law's categories, has no ready category for a birth that is not physical, and his very confusion sets up Jesus' correction in the next verse.

John 3:5

The bench names three readings of water rather than choosing among them: Christian baptism read back into the saying, ordinary physical birth (the water of the womb) paired with the Spirit's birth as its answer, and Ezekiel's promise of clean water poured out with a new spirit given (Ezek 36:25-27), the exact Old Testament background a master of Israel ought to have known. Whichever the reference, the sentence binds an outward sign to an inward work without collapsing one into the other, and Jesus' rebuke in verse 10 (Art thou a master of Israel, and knowest not these things) suggests the image was not new revelation but a prophecy Nicodemus should already have recognized.

John 3:6

The parallel sentence states a law rather than a metaphor: a birth can only produce offspring of its own kind, so ordinary human generation, however devout the parents, produces only what flesh can produce, and no amount of effort raises flesh into spirit. The bench reads the verse as ruling out religious pedigree as a substitute for the new birth, aimed precisely at a ruler who might suppose his birth as a Jew and a Pharisee already qualified him.

John 3:7

Jesus addresses the visible astonishment on Nicodemus's face directly, and the plural ye must be born again in the Greek widens the command past this one ruler to every hearer, Jew and Gentile, learned and unlearned alike. The bench notes the gentleness of the correction: he does not mock the confusion of verse 4 but simply repeats the necessity, patient with a genuine seeker even while refusing to soften the demand.

John 3:8

The single Greek word pneuma serves for both wind and Spirit, and Jesus plays on the ambiguity deliberately: the wind is heard and felt in its effects though its origin and destination stay hidden from the one standing in it, and so is every one that is born of the Spirit. The bench reads the comparison as an answer to a demand Nicodemus has not voiced but surely feels, that a supernatural birth ought to be explainable in the terms a master of Israel already commands, and Jesus instead points him to mystery that is real without being mastered.

John 3:9-10

Nicodemus's question has not moved past verse 4 despite two further sayings, and Jesus turns the conversation from patience to a pointed rebuke, Art thou a master of Israel, and knowest not these things. The bench takes the rebuke as directed at Israel's own teachers generally, whose office was to know the Spirit's regenerating work from the prophets, Ezekiel and Jeremiah both promising new hearts and a law written within, so that Nicodemus's ignorance is a failure of his calling, not merely of his intellect.

John 3:11-12

The plural we widens Jesus' voice beyond himself alone, the bench reading it as either the full weight of Father, Son, and Spirit together or Jesus joined with every true witness the Gospel has already named, John the Baptist among them, all testifying to what has actually been seen rather than speculated. Ye receive not our witness returns to the trial language that runs through the whole book, and the argument from lesser to greater in verse 12, earthly things unbelieved making heavenly things unbelievable, exposes the real obstacle as unbelief rather than any lack in the evidence offered.

John 3:13

The verse claims a unique qualification for Jesus to speak of heavenly things: no one has gone up to bring back a report, but he alone has come down from heaven, and the Son of man which is in heaven names a presence that the incarnation, on this reading, never emptied out. The bench treats the present tense which is as deliberate rather than careless, the eternal Son's heavenly being continuing even while he stands on earth speaking to Nicodemus, the same paradox of presence the prologue already stated of the Word with God and God.

John 3:14-15

Jesus names his own type from Numbers 21:8-9, the bronze serpent Moses raised on a pole so that anyone bitten by the fiery serpents need only look and live, and even so must the Son of man be lifted up applies the pattern directly to the cross still ahead of him. The likeness the bench draws out runs deeper than the lifting up alone: the serpent bore the very likeness of the thing that was killing the people, and Christ on the cross bears sin's own form though he knew no sin (2 Cor 5:21), so that looking in simple faith, not effort, becomes the whole of the remedy. That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life gives the first appearance in this Gospel of the whosoever that will not narrow again.

John 3:16

For God so loved the world: The verse the church has always set at its center states the gift's source, its scope, and its cost in a single sentence, so loved measuring the intensity rather than merely the fact of the love, the world naming humanity in its fallen state as the object rather than any select portion of it, and his only begotten Son the price paid to give whosoever believeth eternal life instead of perishing. The bench reads the verse as the whole prologue's logos theology turned into an offer: the Word who was with God and was God is now given, and the giving is love's own definition rather than merely its proof.

John 3:17-18

The purpose of the sending is stated negatively before it is stated positively, ruling out condemnation as the Son's mission before affirming that the world through him might be saved, a corrective the bench applies against any reading of Christ's first coming as primarily a coming in judgment. He that believeth on him is not condemned states the positive side plainly, and he that believeth not is condemned already reverses the ordinary picture of judgment as a future event alone: unbelief is its own present verdict, already in force because it refuses the only Son in whose name life is offered.

John 3:19-21

The condemnation named here is not an arbitrary sentence but the light's own effect simply by shining: men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil, and the bench reads the choice as moral rather than merely intellectual, a love of darkness that precedes and explains the unbelief of verse 18. Every one that doeth evil hateth the light and avoids it for fear of exposure, while he that doeth truth comes to the light willingly, that his deeds may be made manifest as wrought in God, the whole passage enacting in miniature the light and darkness thread this Gospel carries from 1:4-5 onward.

John 3:22-24

Jesus withdraws from Jerusalem into the Judean countryside where his disciples baptize (4:2 clarifies that Jesus himself did not baptize but his disciples did), and John continues his own baptizing at Aenon near Salim, a site chosen, the text notes plainly, because there was much water there. The parenthetical remark that John was not yet cast into prison quietly sets this scene before the imprisonment the Synoptic Gospels record, the two ministries running side by side for a season rather than the Baptist's work ending the moment Jesus began his own.

John 3:25-26

A dispute over ceremonial washing among John's own disciples and a Jewish questioner becomes the occasion for a report meant to provoke, the same one who was with thee beyond Jordan, to whom thou barest witness, now baptizing crowds of his own, and all men come to him. The bench hears jealousy and wounded pride in the report brought to John, the very success John himself had predicted now presented to him as a grievance rather than a fulfillment.

John 3:27-28

John's answer refuses the frame of rivalry outright, tracing both his own limited role and Jesus' greater one back to the same divine giving, so that no man, John included, can claim more than heaven allots him. Ye yourselves bear me witness recalls his own earlier confession, I am not the Christ, but that I am sent before him, and the bench notes he asks for no sympathy, only holds his hearers to what they already heard him say.

John 3:29-30

John reaches for a wedding image to answer the wedding complaint brought to him: the bride belongs to the bridegroom alone, and the friend of the bridegroom, whose whole part is to stand near and rejoice at his voice, has nothing to envy in the marriage he only attends. His own joy is complete precisely because the bridegroom now has the crowd rather than the friend keeping it for himself, and his summary of his own calling, he must increase, but I must decrease, has become the church's own pattern for every ministry that serves a greater name than its own.

John 3:31-33

The bench notes without resolving that these closing verses may still be John the Baptist's own speech carried forward, or may be the evangelist's own commentary added to close the scene, the Gospel's Greek text giving no quotation marks to settle the question either way; the content fits either speaker, since it only extends the Baptist's confession in verse 30 into its full contrast. He that is of the earth is earthly speaks of every merely human teacher including John himself, while he that cometh from heaven testifies only what he has himself seen and heard, and no man receiveth his testimony returns to the theme of 1:11, though he that hath received it hath set to his seal that God is true, the smaller company of believers standing against the wider unbelief.

John 3:34-36

He whom God hath sent speaks the very words of God, and the reason given is the Spirit's unmeasured presence in him, unlike the partial and varied measure given to the prophets before him. The Father loveth the Son and hath given all things into his hand, and the chapter's closing verse offers the starkest choice in the Gospel so far without qualification: he that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life already, present possession rather than a future hope alone, while he that believeth not the Son shall not see life, the wrath of God abiding on him, a condition already in place rather than merely threatened.
