John 12:1-2

six days before the passover: Six days before the passover Jesus comes back to Bethany, to the house of the man he had raised, and the timestamp matters because the chief priests are already resolved on his death (11:53) and every day now runs toward the cross. Martha serves as she served at Luke 10:40, unrebuked this time, her gift being the same hands doing the same work, and Lazarus sits at the table as living proof of what those hands' Master can do. The bench reads the supper as the last quiet meal before the public week begins, the household that owed Jesus everything giving him what it had.

John 12:3

A pound of ointment of spikenard, very costly, is by the common estimate of the room itself (v.5) worth a laborer's wages for the better part of a year, and Mary empties the whole of it at once rather than the drop or two custom allowed. She anoints the feet, not the head as royal custom would expect, and wipes them with her hair, an act of such self-abasement that Jerome and the commentators after him read it as love that has stopped counting its own dignity. The house was filled with the odour: the bench notes that her extravagance became everyone's inheritance, the fragrance reaching every guest in the room whether they understood the gift or not.

John 12:4-6

Judas Iscariot, Simon's son, which should betray him, objects in the currency of arithmetic, three hundred pence set against one act of devotion, and the objection would carry weight from any other mouth. John supplies the verdict the scene needs and no character in it gives: not that he cared for the poor, but because he was a thief, and had the bag. The bag he carried made him treasurer of the very group whose Lord he was pricing, and the bench reads the detail as John's own quiet warning that a hand near the money is not the same as a heart near the Master.

John 12:7-8

Let her alone: against the day of my burying hath she kept this, Jesus answers, reading in Mary's act a preparation she likely did not fully intend, and the bench notes that the burial he speaks of is now six days off. For the poor always ye have with you; but me ye have not always answers the arithmetic with a calendar: charity has all of history to be done, but this hour, standing in front of them, will not come again. Wesley reads the line as no license against giving to the poor, since the same Lord commanded it everywhere else, but as a plain statement that some moments carry a claim no later moment can repeat.

John 12:9-11

Much people of the Jews therefore knew that he was there, and they come not for Jesus only but to see Lazarus, the walking exhibit of a miracle no one could argue away. The chief priests answer the crowd's curiosity with a plan to kill Lazarus too, a decision the bench calls the logical end of a leadership that has already decided the evidence does not matter, since a man raised from four days dead is not an argument that can be out-debated, only silenced. Many of the Jews went away, and believed on Jesus because of him: the raising of Lazarus is doing in this chapter exactly the evangelistic work the seventh sign was built to do.

John 12:12-15

The people took branches of palm trees, the nation's own symbol of victory and festival joy, and cried Hosanna, save now, Psalm 118's own pilgrim shout, over a King entering not on a warhorse but on a young ass. John names the fulfillment openly, Zechariah 9:9's daughter of Sion, thy King cometh, sitting on an ass's colt, a prophecy every hearer of the feast would have known and few would have expected fulfilled this way. The commentators from Lightfoot down read the whole scene as Jesus deliberately staging his messianic claim in the one image Zechariah had already supplied, a king of peace riding into a city that wanted a king of war.

John 12:16

These things understood not his disciples at the first, John admits plainly of his own company, the fulfilled prophecy passing over their heads on the day it happened. Only when Jesus was glorified did the memory return with its meaning attached, and the bench reads the confession as evidence of the Gospel's own honesty, an eyewitness willing to record how little he grasped in the moment rather than retrofitting a tidier memory. The remembering itself becomes a small proof of the Spirit's later promise at 14:26, to bring all things to their remembrance.

John 12:17-19

The people that was with him when he called Lazarus out of his grave bare record, John's witness structure gathering another deposition, an eyewitness class large enough that the leadership cannot simply deny the event. The Pharisees answer the swelling crowd with despair rather than denial, Perceive ye how ye prevail nothing? behold, the world is gone after him, and the bench notes the unintended prophecy in their complaint, since John will shortly bring literal Greeks, representatives of that very world, to Jesus' door. Their own words concede what their plotting refuses to accept.

John 12:20-22

Certain Greeks among them that came up to worship at the feast, Gentile proselytes drawn by Israel's God, come to Philip with the request every preacher since has taken as his own commission, Sir, we would see Jesus. Philip, himself a Greek-named Galilean of a Gentile-bordering town, tells Andrew, and the two together, not one alone, bring the request to Jesus, the bench noting the small detail of shared caution or shared honor in how carefully the request travels before it lands. The scene answers the Pharisees' complaint from the verse before: the world has in fact begun coming, in exactly the form they feared.

John 12:23

The hour is come, that the Son of man should be glorified: the request of Gentile strangers is what triggers the announcement, and the bench reads the timing as deliberate, since the hour that was not yet come at 2:4, 7:30, and 8:20 arrives here at the first sign that the world beyond Israel is reaching for him. Every earlier delay now resolves into a single declaration, and the chapter's remaining verses will spell out what glorification actually costs. The Son of man, Daniel 7's title claimed by Jesus for himself since 1:51, is glorified by the road that follows, not around it.

John 12:24

Except a corn of wheat fall into the ground and die, it abideth alone: but if it die, it bringeth forth much fruit, the doubled Verily, verily marking a saying that carries the whole chapter's weight in one agricultural picture. The single grain's death is not loss but multiplication, the pattern of his own coming burial answered by a harvest no solitary kernel could produce, and the bench reads it as the Lord explaining his cross to a request from Greeks in the one image every farmer in the crowd would understand without a lecture. Chrysostom preaches the verse as the law of the kingdom itself, life given away being the only life that spreads.

John 12:25-26

He that loveth his life shall lose it; and he that hateth his life in this world shall keep it unto life eternal, the grain's principle applied to every disciple who would follow the pattern Jesus has just named. Hateth is the Semitic idiom of comparative preference, not literal self-contempt, loving self less than one loves the kingdom, and the bench reads the saying alongside the Synoptic form of the same hard word (Matt 16:25). If any man serve me, let him follow me ties the promise to the person, not to a program, and the honour it names, my Father honour him, is the only reward the verse offers or needs.

John 12:27-28

Now is my soul troubled; and what shall I say? Father, save me from this hour: but for this cause came I unto this hour: the sentence starts toward the very prayer he prays at Gethsemane and turns itself back mid-breath, the true humanity of the Lord admitting dread without letting dread choose his path. Father, glorify thy name answers his own question, and the voice from heaven, I have both glorified it, and will glorify it again, is the only audible reply from the Father recorded in this Gospel, looking back to every sign already done and forward to the cross still to come. The bench reads the exchange as the clearest window in John into the cost the incarnation carried without ever compromising the will behind it.

John 12:29-30

The people that stood by said that it thundered: others said, An angel spake to him, the crowd hearing the same sound and reaching two different explanations, neither of them the true one, and the bench notes the detail as one more small proof that a miracle heard is no guarantee of a miracle understood. Jesus answered and said, This voice came not because of me, but for your sakes: the Father needed no confirming word, the hearers did, and the sign is aimed at faith in the crowd rather than reassurance for the Son. It is the same pattern as Lazarus' tomb (11:42), a work done for the Father's own glory offered again as evidence for those still watching.

John 12:31-33

Now is the judgment of this world: now shall the prince of this world be cast out, the cross read here as courtroom and battlefield at once, a verdict against the world's ruling order executed at the very moment that order thinks it has won. And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all men unto me repeats the brazen serpent language of 3:14 and widens its reach past Israel to all men, and John supplies his own gloss so no reader mistakes the image, this he said, signifying what death he should die. Lifted up carries both senses at once in the Greek, raised on a cross and exalted in glory, the two events John refuses to separate.

John 12:34

We have heard out of the law that Christ abideth for ever: how sayest thou, The Son of man must be lifted up? the crowd sets one strand of messianic expectation, the eternal Davidic throne of Psalm 89 and Isaiah 9:7, against the dying Son of man Jesus has just named, and cannot yet hold the two together. Who is this Son of man is asked in honest confusion rather than hostility, and the bench notes that the question answers itself only once the resurrection joins the two strands the crowd could not, an eternal reign entered precisely through the death they cannot reconcile with it. The tension the verse records is the same one the whole Gospel is written to resolve.

John 12:35-36

Yet a little while is the light with you. Walk while ye have the light, lest darkness come upon you: Jesus answers their confusion not with more explanation but with an urgent command, the light and darkness thread of the whole Gospel (1:5, 8:12, 9:5) reaching its last public appeal before the passion narrative begins. While ye have light, believe in the light, that ye may be the children of light closes the public ministry on an invitation rather than a verdict, and the last clause is stark, these things spake Jesus, and departed, and did hide himself from them. The bench reads the hiding as more than a retreat from danger, the Light withdrawing from those who have had every opportunity to walk in it.

John 12:37-41

Though he had done so many miracles before them, yet they believed not on him: John steps out of the narrative to render his own verdict on Israel's rejection, and he reaches for two texts from one prophet to explain it, Isaiah 53:1, Lord, who hath believed our report, and Isaiah 6:9-10, he hath blinded their eyes, and hardened their heart. The first names unbelief as a fact the prophets already foresaw, the second names a judicial hardening that follows persistent refusal rather than causing it from the outside, the two texts together holding human responsibility and divine sovereignty without collapsing either into the other. John's closing note is the boldest claim in the chapter: these things said Esaias, when he saw his glory, and spake of him, identifying the throne-room vision of Isaiah 6 as a vision of Christ himself, an essential claim to Christ's deity that the site's confession holds at full strength.

John 12:42-43

Among the chief rulers also many believed on him, John records, naming a secret faith among the very class that has been plotting Jesus' death, men like Nicodemus and Joseph of Arimathea whose names the Gospel will supply later. Because of the Pharisees they did not confess him, lest they should be put out of the synagogue, the same aposynagogos penalty named at 9:22, social and religious excommunication weighed against public confession and found, in these men, too heavy to risk. John's own diagnosis is blunt, for they loved the praise of men more than the praise of God, and the bench reads the line as a warning aimed past the first century, belief that never becomes confession still counting for something less than the Gospel asks.

John 12:44-46

Jesus cried and said, a summary cry, likely gathered here by John from the public ministry rather than a single fresh occasion, and its content is the claim that has run under every sign, he that believeth on me, believeth not on me, but on him that sent me. He that seeth me seeth him that sent me anticipates almost word for word what he will tell Philip in the upper room (14:9), the unity of Father and Son stated here as a summary before it is unpacked there in private. I am come a light into the world closes the public ministry on the same note it opened on at 1:9, the true Light now having walked among the very people it came to illumine.

John 12:47-48

If any man hear my words, and believe not, I judge him not: for I came not to judge the world, but to save the world, restating 3:17 at the very close of the public ministry, the first coming aimed at rescue rather than sentence. He that rejecteth me, and receiveth not my words, hath one that judgeth him still names a real judgment, only a deferred one, the word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day. The bench reads the pairing as the Gospel's full position held together rather than traded one for the other, mercy now and accountability later, the rejected word itself becoming the standard at the final reckoning.

John 12:49-50

For I have not spoken of myself; but the Father which sent me, he gave me a commandment, what I should say, and what I should speak, the chapter's last words returning to the dependence Jesus has claimed throughout this Gospel, a Son who speaks nothing apart from the Father who sent him. And I know that his commandment is life everlasting names the content of that commandment in one phrase, and the Book of Signs closes on the same word its purpose statement will name at 20:31, life through his name. The bench marks the verse as the hinge into the Book of Glory, the public teaching finished and the private hours with the disciples about to begin.
