Jeremiah 4:1-4

put away thine abominations out of my sight: The call to return sets its own conditions, abominations put away and an oath sworn in truth, in judgment, and in righteousness, so that the nations bless themselves in Israel's God and glory in him, the bench hearing an echo of the word given to Abraham that in his seed all nations would be blessed. Break up your fallow ground and sow not among thorns turns farming into repentance, ground long hardened made ready before any new obedience can take root, and circumcise yourselves to the Lord names the cutting the outward sign at Abraham's covenant was always meant to picture, the heart rather than the flesh.

Jeremiah 4:5-9

Blow ye the trumpet in the land: The alarm is sounded in stages, trumpet, standard toward Zion, and then the enemy named in a figure, the lion is come up from his thicket, and the destroyer of the Gentiles is on his way, ancient royal language for an invading king turned against Judah's own capital. The panic reaches every office that should have steadied the people, the heart of the king shall perish, the priests shall be astonished, and the prophets shall wonder, the whole leadership caught without an answer at the one moment it was needed.

Jeremiah 4:10-12

surely thou hast greatly deceived this people: Jeremiah's outburst, thou hast greatly deceived this people, has drawn two readings from the bench: some take it as the prophet voicing, in shock, what the false prophets of peace had promised in the Lord's name without warrant, the deception theirs and not God's; others read a stronger permissive sense, that the Lord gave the lying prophets leave to speak as they did as a further judgment on a people who preferred the lie, the logic 1 Kings 22 shows at Ahab's court. Either reading keeps the sword's reach the same, unto the soul, the false peace preached from the pulpit answered by real war at the gate.

Jeremiah 4:13-18

his chariots shall be as a whirlwind: The invader is pictured in speed alone, clouds, whirlwind, horses swifter than eagles, before a single blow is described, the terror working through pace rather than detail. Wash thine heart from wickedness answers the circumcision call of verse 4 in the language of ritual cleansing, and the siege that follows is drawn as agricultural care turned hostile, watchers coming from a far country to stand as keepers of a field, the same verb used of shepherds tending a flock now describing an army tending its prey.

Jeremiah 4:19-22

My bowels, my bowels!: The prophet's own body answers the trumpet before he can compose a sentence about it, bowels, heart, and a noise he cannot still, the same licensed grief that runs through the confessions of chapters 11 to 20 breaking out here at the first sound of the enemy rather than waiting for the city's fall. The indictment that follows, my people is foolish, they have not known me, wise to do evil, but to do good they have no knowledge, is Jeremiah's own diagnosis inside his own weeping, sin and sorrow held together rather than one replacing the other.

Jeremiah 4:23-26

it was without form, and void: The vision borrows its own creation account's Hebrew for chaos, without form and void, the same phrase Genesis uses for the earth before the first day, and runs it backward, mountains trembling, birds fled, the fruitful place a wilderness, cities broken down. Judgment is pictured as creation undone rather than merely a battle lost, the bench reading it as one of the clearest statements in the prophets that covenant unfaithfulness unravels the created order itself, not only the nation that broke it.

Jeremiah 4:27-28

yet will I not make a full end: Full desolation is announced and then qualified in the same breath, yet will I not make a full end, a phrase the book returns to at 5:10 and 5:18 as the standing limit on every judgment it pronounces, ruin held short of extinction. The heavens mourning in black and the earth's refusal to relent, I have spoken it, I have purposed it, and will not repent, hold both halves together, a sentence certain to fall and a people not certain to be erased by it.

Jeremiah 4:29-31

climb up upon the rocks: Flight empties the cities into thicket and rock, and the chapter closes on a figure the book will use again, the daughter of Zion pictured as a woman in her first labor, that bewaileth herself, that spreadeth her hands. The painted face and crimson clothing of verse 30 are Jerusalem dressed for lovers who will turn on her, they will seek thy life, beauty and ornament unable to buy back a covenant broken at its own root.
