Jeremiah 14:1-6

The word of the Lord that came to Jeremiah concerning the dearth: The oracle opens on a drought so complete that every rank of creature feels it: nobles sending servants to empty cisterns, plowmen covering their heads in shame at bare ground, the hind forsaking her newborn calf for want of grass, wild asses gasping like jackals on the high places. Henry reads the spread from noble to farmer to animal as the point, a judgment that respects no station because the sin behind it was Judah's as a whole. The drought is never explained here as ordinary weather; the chapter that follows makes plain it is the covenant's own curse for a broken covenant.

Jeremiah 14:7-9

O Lord, though our iniquities testify against us: The people's prayer names its own guilt honestly, our iniquities testify against us, and appeals past merit entirely to the Lord's own name and his own reputation as Israel's hope and savior in trouble. Calvin reads the questions that follow, why shouldest thou be as a stranger, as a wayfaring man that turneth aside, as bold rather than irreverent, a covenant people reminding God of a covenant he made. The prayer's honesty is real, and the next verse shows it is not, by itself, the repentance the Lord requires.

Jeremiah 14:10-12

Thus saith the Lord unto this people, Thus have they loved to wander: The Lord answers the prayer of verses 7 through 9 by naming the pattern beneath it, they have loved to wander, and they have not refrained their feet, words offered without the walk to back them. Jeremiah is told directly, pray not for this people for their good, and told that fasting and burnt offerings will not be accepted, worship without turning treated as no worship at all. Gill reads this as one of the book's hardest verses, a prophet forbidden the very intercession his office exists to make, because the people's heart had not moved even while their prayer sounded right.

Jeremiah 14:13-16

Then said I, Ah, Lord God! behold, the prophets say unto them: Jeremiah objects on the people's behalf, pointing to prophets promising assured peace, and the Lord's reply is direct, the prophets prophesy lies in my name, I sent them not. The false prophets and the people who believed them are named for the same fate, cast out in the streets, none to bury them, judgment falling on the deceivers and the deceived together. Keil reads the unburied dead as the ultimate covenant curse, dishonor extending past death itself, the horror the book keeps returning to when it names what siege and famine actually do to a city.

Jeremiah 14:17-18

Therefore thou shalt say this word unto them; Let mine eyes run down with tears: Jeremiah is commanded to weep, let mine eyes run down with tears night and day, and let them not cease, grief made part of the message rather than a private reaction to it. The virgin daughter of my people broken with a great breach names the wound in the tenderest possible term for a people the Lord still calls his own even as he judges them. The verse that follows sets the horror in both directions at once, the slain by the sword in the field and the sick with famine in the city, no refuge left in either place, prophet and priest alike wandering a land they no longer know.

Jeremiah 14:19-22

Hast thou utterly rejected Judah? hath thy soul lothed Zion?: The chapter's second confession is fuller and more anguished than the first, we acknowledge our wickedness paired with a direct appeal to covenant loyalty, remember, break not thy covenant with us. Gill reads the closing question, are there any among the vanities of the Gentiles that can cause rain?, as the prayer's real turn, a rejection of every rival power in the same breath as the confession, no idol able to do what only the Lord who made all these things can do. The chapter ends without an answer recorded, the plea left standing as the last word of the oracle, and the bench notes that chapter 15 opens with the Lord's answer to it.
