Ezekiel 21:1-5

The sign act of chapter twenty escalates into open speech, the Lord draws forth his sword out of his sheath against the land of Israel and states plainly that it will cut off from thee the righteous and the wicked together. Gill reads the righteous alongside the wicked not as innocence swept away with guilt but as the ordinary judgment that falls on a besieged city, sword, famine and captivity making no private exception for the good man inside its walls. The oracle's purpose is stated in its own recognition formula, that all flesh may know that I the Lord have drawn forth my sword, and the sword once drawn is promised not to return any more.

Ezekiel 21:6-7

The prophet is himself made a sign again, commanded to sigh with the breaking of thy loins and with bitterness before the eyes of the exiles watching him. When they ask the reason he is to answer only for the tidings, because it cometh, refusing to explain further until the news itself explains it. Henry reads the bodily collapse the verse then describes, every heart shall melt, all hands feeble, all knees weak as water, as Ezekiel's own body rehearsing in advance the terror Jerusalem's people would feel when the siege actually began.

Ezekiel 21:8-11

A poem of a sword follows, sharpened to make a sore slaughter and furbished that it may glitter, the weapon itself given voice as it is prepared. Should we then make mirth, the sword's own question, rebukes a court that could still find occasion for feasting while judgment was already being ground to an edge. Keil reads it contemneth the rod of my son, as every tree as the sword's contempt for every human defense, sceptre and timber both, once it is given into the hand of the slayer.

Ezekiel 21:12-13

The prophet is told to cry and howl and smite upon thy thigh, the ancient gesture of grief, because the sword is coming upon my people and upon all the princes of Israel without distinction of rank. It shall be upon my people states plainly that the coming judgment is national rather than aimed only at a guilty court, a claim the chapter has already made once at verse three. Fairbairn reads it is a trial as marking the invasion as a proving rather than a random calamity, testing whether the rod, the royal house itself, would stand or be found no more.

Ezekiel 21:14-15

The prophet is now commanded to act the sword himself, smite thine hands together, and let the sword be doubled the third time, a phrase the bench reads as intensifying repetition rather than a literal count of three strikes. It is the sword of the great men that are slain, which entereth into their privy chambers, aiming the judgment at exactly the rank that expected its walls and status to shelter it. Gill reads the point of the sword against all their gates as the specific image of a city's defenses, its very entrances, turned into the place where its own ruin multiplies.

Ezekiel 21:16-17

Go thee one way or other, either on the right hand, or on the left, whithersoever thy face is set is addressed to the sword itself, given free range to strike wherever it is turned rather than a single predictable path. The Lord then claims the action as his own, I will also smite mine hands together, and I will cause my fury to rest, the same gesture the prophet has just been commanded to perform now attributed to God directly. I the Lord have said it closes the unit the way the chapter closes several of its units, a formula of certainty rather than mere prediction.

Ezekiel 21:18-20

A new oracle instructs the prophet to appoint thee two ways, a piece of street theater drawing a literal signpost where the road forks, one way leading to Rabbath of the Ammonites and the other to Judah in Jerusalem the defenced. The act dramatizes the real military choice Nebuchadnezzar faced when he marched west, whether to strike the Ammonite capital or the walled city of Jerusalem first. Clarke reads the head of the way to the city as the crossroads itself, staged so exiles watching the prophet would see the decision made in miniature before Babylon's army made it in fact.

Ezekiel 21:21-23

The king of Babylon stood at the parting of the way to use divination, three methods named together, arrows shaken and read, images consulted, and the liver examined, the standard Babylonian practice the bench identifies without embellishment. At his right hand was the divination for Jerusalem states that the pagan omens, however worthless in themselves, pointed the king's army toward the holy city rather than Rabbath. Fairbairn reads it shall be unto them as a false divination in their sight as the irony the chapter intends, Judah would dismiss the omen as empty superstition even while the Lord used it to bring remembered iniquity to judgment.

Ezekiel 21:24

The reason the omen lands on Jerusalem rather than Rabbath is stated without ambiguity, because your iniquity is to be remembered, in that your transgressions are discovered, so that in all your doings your sins do appear. The verse insists the coming captivity is not chance favoring one road over another but the exposure of guilt already plain, ye shall be taken with the hand. Henry reads the phrase come to remembrance not as God forgetting and recalling but as the moment a settled account is finally called due.

Ezekiel 21:25-27

The oracle turns to name its target directly, thou, profane wicked prince of Israel, whose day is come, widely identified as Zedekiah, the last king to wear the crown before Jerusalem fell. Remove the diadem, and take off the crown announces the end of the monarchy in that line, and the triple overturn, overturn, overturn marks a total reversal rather than a partial correction. The clause that follows, until he come whose right it is, and I will give it him, is read by many of the older commentators as a promise of the throne's rightful heir still to come, commonly set beside the sceptre promise of Genesis forty nine ten as the same hope stated twice; a minority reading confines the verse to the near future without naming a further heir, and the exposition names both without deciding between them.

Ezekiel 21:28-29

The two ways from verses eighteen through twenty have their second half addressed directly, thou, son of man, prophesy concerning the Ammonites, whose sword is also drawn and furbished for the slaughter though their day of judgment lags behind Jerusalem's. Whiles they see vanity unto thee, whiles they divine a lie unto thee names Ammon's own confidence, likely relief at watching the Babylonian sword turn toward Jerusalem instead of Rabbath. Gill reads the reprieve as only postponement, the chapter having already promised that Ammon's own reckoning still waits at its own appointed time.

Ezekiel 21:30-32

Shall I cause it to return into his sheath answers its own question, the sword will not be sheathed until it has done its full work, and the Lord promises to judge Ammon in the place where thou wast created, in the land of thy nativity rather than allow the nation any refuge abroad. Deliver thee into the hand of brutish men, and skilful to destroy names the Babylonians a second time under a different description, an army skilled precisely at the destruction Ammon is about to receive. Thou shalt be no more remembered closes the oracle the way the chapter opened it, a sword drawn that does not return, now finished against the second of its two appointed targets.
