Ezekiel 18:1-4

The chapter names a proverb circulating among the exiles, the fathers have eaten sour grapes, and the children's teeth are set on edge, blaming their own suffering entirely on prior generations' sin. Jeremiah cites the identical proverb in the same exile, and Ezekiel is sent to retire it by name, ye shall not have occasion any more to use this proverb in Israel. Gill reads the thesis that follows, the soul that sinneth, it shall die, as the whole chapter's argument compressed into one line, every soul standing before God on its own account.

Ezekiel 18:5-9

The just man is described by a list of concrete acts rather than abstract virtue, no idols, no adultery, restoring the debtor's pledge, feeding the hungry, refusing usury, walking in God's statutes, and the verdict follows plainly, he is just, he shall surely live. Henry notes the list draws directly on the law's own social ethics, so that righteousness here is never merely ritual but reaches into ordinary dealings between neighbors. Wesley reads the specificity as deliberate, giving the exiles a concrete standard rather than a vague appeal to character.

Ezekiel 18:10-13

The same just man's son may turn violent and idolatrous, and the verdict shifts entirely with him, shall he then live? he shall not live, his own sins alone condemning him regardless of his father's record. Clarke reads the case as pointedly answering the sour-grape proverb, a righteous father's merit does not carry a wicked son past his own guilt. The phrase his blood shall be upon him fixes responsibility on the man himself, the same formula the watchman charge in chapters 3 and 33 uses for a hearer who will not turn.

Ezekiel 18:14-18

A third generation appears, a son who watches his violent father's sins and chooses differently, and the verdict returns to life, he shall not die for the iniquity of his father, he shall surely live. The father, meanwhile, dies in his own iniquity regardless of any son's righteousness, the case built symmetrically to close off inheritance running in either direction. Keil reads the three-generation sequence as the chapter's argument by example before it is stated as principle, proof offered before the doctrine is named outright.

Ezekiel 18:19-20

The people's objection is voiced directly, and Ezekiel answers it with the chapter's flattest statement of the principle, the son shall not bear the iniquity of the father, neither shall the father bear the iniquity of the son. Barnes reads the verse as correcting a misapplication of Exodus 20:5's visiting of iniquity upon children, which describes a general pattern of consequence across generations rather than each soul's standing before God at judgment. The righteousness of the righteous shall be upon him closes the case in the form of law, each account settled on its own ledger.

Ezekiel 18:21-23

The principle turns from static standing to moving repentance: a wicked man who turns and keeps God's statutes shall surely live, his past transgressions not mentioned against him. The chapter's own question follows, have I any pleasure at all that the wicked should die?, God's stated preference named directly rather than left to be inferred from his patience. Henry reads verse 23 as the emotional center of the whole passage, judgment never presented as something God wants, only as something justice requires when repentance is refused.

Ezekiel 18:24

The principle runs the other direction with equal force: a righteous man who turns to iniquity forfeits the record of his former righteousness, which shall not be mentioned, and dies in the sin he then commits. Wesley reads the symmetry as the chapter's whole point stated in miniature, standing before God is never a stored balance but a present condition. The verse has occasioned real disagreement among later theologians over final perseverance, and the exposition names it without resolving that larger debate here.

Ezekiel 18:25-29

The exiles complain that God's way is unequal, and the answer, repeated twice almost word for word, turns the charge back on the objectors, are not your ways unequal? Fairbairn reads the doubled exchange as evidence the complaint was a live grievance among the exiles, worth answering fully rather than dismissing in one line. The argument's method throughout has been the same, plain restatement of the standard rather than new argument, since the standard itself is the whole answer.

Ezekiel 18:30-32

The chapter closes on command rather than argument, repent, and turn yourselves from all your transgressions, make you a new heart and a new spirit, an appeal that anticipates the new heart the Lord himself promises to give at 36:26. Keil reads the juxtaposition as deliberate, the same chapter that has just argued individual responsibility at length ends by admitting the new heart is finally God's own gift, not mere self-effort. The book's own gospel note closes the case, for I have no pleasure in the death of him that dieth, restated in the same words at 33:11 when the city has already fallen.
