on Ezekiel 8:5-6
The guide names the first abomination, “this idol of jealousy” set “in the entrance north of the Altar Gate,” the place nearest the true worship. He names the cost: “to drive Me far from My sanctuary.” The glory’s departure is named before the tour reaches the worst.

The Lord asks Ezekiel whether he sees the great abominations of the house of Israel. These sins will drive the Lord far from His own sanctuary. Jerome reads the question as a defense of God, who leaves the temple for good cause, and still greater abominations are to come.
