Acts1chapter 1

Acts 1:1-3

Luke opens his second volume by naming his first, the Gospel he calls an account of all that Jesus began both to do and teach, so Acts is presented from its first sentence as continuation rather than a new subject. Theophilus receives no title here, unlike the most excellent Theophilus of Luke 1:3, and the bench differs over whether the shorter address argues growing familiarity or a plain habit of address, without either reading changing the book's purpose. The forty days of infallible proofs span from the resurrection to the ascension, and the risen Christ's own subject through that stretch is named as the things pertaining to the kingdom of God, the same kingdom the disciples will misread within a few verses.

Acts 1:4-5

The command is to stay together in Jerusalem and wait for the promise of the Father, a promise Jesus had already spoken of in the upper room discourse and now recalls without repeating its content. John truly baptized with water, he says, but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days hence, and the bench notes the deliberate contrast Peter himself will draw again at Cornelius's house. Not many days hence sets the timetable for what chapter two delivers, ten days off, and the promise stays open here rather than being filled in before it arrives.

Acts 1:6-7

When they were come together the disciples ask whether he will at this time restore again the kingdom to Israel, and the bench reads the question as sincere rather than mistaken, since Jesus corrects only its timing and never its hope. It is not for you to know the times or the seasons, which the Father hath put in his own power: the date is withheld, not the promise, and the standing parking order governs every attempt to read a modern calendar back into this verse. Readers who hold a future restoration for national Israel and readers who read the kingdom as already present in the church both stand on this text, and both positions are named here without a verdict stamped on either.

Acts 1:8

But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you, and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth: this single verse gives the whole book its table of contents. Jerusalem carries chapters one through seven, Judea and Samaria eight through twelve, and the uttermost part thirteen through twenty-eight, and readers have followed this outline since long before any modern chapter division existed. Power is placed before witness in the ordering, so the courage the apostles show in the chapters ahead is traced to this gift rather than to native boldness, and the earth's uttermost part is left open rather than closed at Rome.

Acts 1:9-11

he was taken up: While they beheld, he was taken up, and a cloud received him out of their sight, the ascension told with the same restraint Luke uses throughout, the cloud recalling the pillar of Exodus and the overshadowing of the transfiguration without the text saying so outright. Two men in white apparel ask why they stand gazing up into heaven, gently turning the disciples from staring at the sky toward the work ahead of them. This same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go: the bench reads the promise as a bodily and visible return matching a bodily and visible departure, the church's traditional ground for a literal second coming.

Acts 1:12-14

a sabbath day’s journey: The distance from Olivet to Jerusalem is measured by the rabbinic sabbath limit, roughly a half mile the disciples would have known by habit rather than calculation, one small mark of the eyewitness detail running through this book. The eleven are named in the upper room, the same room the bench generally identifies with the site of the last supper, and the company includes the women, Mary the mother of Jesus, and his brethren, the family that had once doubted him now praying alongside the apostles. These all continued with one accord in prayer and supplication, the posture the whole church will keep through the waiting that follows, prayer named here before any of the growth this book will describe.

Acts 1:15-17

Peter stood up in the midst of the disciples, the number of names together about a hundred and twenty, and the bench notes this is the first of the many times in this book Peter leads by speaking rather than by office alone. His subject is Judas, named plainly as one who was numbered with us and had obtained part of this ministry, the record refusing to soften what Judas had actually held before his fall. This scripture must needs have been fulfilled, Peter says of the Psalms he is about to cite, reading the tragedy as within the compass of prophecy rather than as an accident that had derailed God's plan.

Acts 1:18-19

Now this man purchased a field with the reward of iniquity, and falling headlong, he burst asunder in the midst: the bench reads Peter's account alongside Matthew 27:3-10, where the priests buy the potter's field with the returned silver and Judas hangs himself, and holds the two as compatible rather than contradictory, Judas's own money purchasing the field through the priests who bought it in his name, and a broken rope or a fall from a height completing what the hanging began. It was known unto all the dwellers at Jerusalem that the field is called in their proper tongue Aceldama, the field of blood, a name that outlived Judas in the very language of the city. The exposition names the harmonization as the standard reading rather than forcing the two accounts into one sentence the text itself never gives.

Acts 1:20

it is written in the book of Psalms: Peter's citation joins two psalms as one, Psalm 69:25's desolate habitation and Psalm 109:8's office given to another, both imprecatory psalms invoking judgment on a betrayer the psalmist had trusted. His bishoprick, the Greek episkope, is the same word Paul later uses of the overseer's office in 1 Timothy 3:1, so the vacancy Peter names is administrative and apostolic, not merely a curse read into an old text. The bench notes Peter's method here as the pattern for the sermon that follows in chapter two, Scripture read as already speaking to the moment before it is ever applied to it.

Acts 1:21-22

The qualification Peter states runs from the baptism of John to the day the Lord was taken up, deliberately excluding any candidate who had not walked the whole ministry alongside the Twelve, so the office rests on eyewitness testimony rather than later reputation. Must one be ordained to be a witness with us of his resurrection: the resurrection is named as the one fact this office exists to attest, the first sounding of the witness formula that recurs through the rest of the book. The bench notes this standard is why the apostolic office as originally defined could not be repeated once the eyewitness generation had passed, whatever offices the church raised up in the generations after it.

Acts 1:23-26

They appointed two, Joseph called Barsabas surnamed Justus, and Matthias, both apparently companions of the whole ministry and otherwise unknown to the record, a detail the bench reads as evidence the eyewitness circle around Jesus reached well beyond the Twelve. The prayer that follows addresses the Lord as the one who knows the hearts of all men and asks him, not the assembly, to shew which of the two he has chosen, the decision left with God rather than settled by debate. They gave forth their lots, a method rooted in Proverbs 16:33 and the Old Testament priesthood, and the lot fell upon Matthias: whether casting lots here models a continuing practice or belongs only to this interim before Pentecost is a question the traditions answer differently, and both readings are named without a verdict, since Acts records no lot cast again after this chapter.
