2 Chronicles 33:1-2

Manasseh's fifty five years are the longest reign of any king of Judah, and Chronicles opens by tracking 2 Kings 21 almost word for word through verse 9, the same sins in the same order. The parallel material itself belongs to the Kings exposition; what Chronicles adds comes after verse 9, and the chapter is built to get there. Verse 2 measures the son by his father's opposite: Hezekiah tore the high places down, and Manasseh will build them again.

2 Chronicles 33:3-6

The list matches 2 Kings 21:3-6 point for point: high places rebuilt, altars for Baalim, groves, the host of heaven worshipped, and altars raised inside the house of the Lord itself, the one place the name was promised to dwell. Manasseh also caused his children to pass through the fire in the valley of Hinnom and turned to enchantment, witchcraft, and a familiar spirit, the same catalogue Deuteronomy 18 forbids by name. Chronicles keeps every item; its own contribution is the sentence still to come.

2 Chronicles 33:7-9

The image goes up in the house God named to David and Solomon as the place he would put his name for ever, the very promise of 1 Chronicles 28 and 2 Chronicles 7 turned into the site of an idol. Verse 8 restates the conditional given at the temple's dedication, the land held on condition of obedience to the law of Moses, and Manasseh's idol stands as the broken half of that condition. Verse 9 closes the parallel section: he made Judah err worse than the nations the Lord had destroyed before them, language 2 Kings 21:9 also carries.

2 Chronicles 33:10

2 Kings 21:10-15 gives the extended oracle of national doom the prophets spoke against Jerusalem for Manasseh's sin, the sentence that Kings will not let his later repentance undo. Chronicles compresses all of it into one verse, the Lord spoke and they would not hearken, and moves straight to what happens next. The Chronicler's selection is visible in the gap: the doom oracle he already told is not repeated, and the space it leaves is given instead to the turn Kings never records.

2 Chronicles 33:11-13

This is the material 2 Kings never carries: the king taken among the thorns and bound with fetters for Babylon, likely under Esarhaddon, whom Assyrian records list among his tributaries and who alone of Assyria's kings held court there. In affliction Manasseh besought the Lord and humbled himself greatly, and he was entreated, heard, and returned to his kingdom: then Manasseh knew that the Lord he was God, a sentence with no counterpart anywhere in Kings. 2 Kings 23:26 still counts Manasseh's sin as the reason Judah is finally cast out; Chronicles tells the personal mercy without cancelling that verdict, and both stand as the book's two portraits of the same king. A prayer titled the Prayer of Manasseh circulates among the apocryphal books as a devotional filling in of this scene; it is a labeled study resource, never canon, and the verses above are what Scripture itself records.

2 Chronicles 33:14

The wall Manasseh builds outside the city of David, west of Gihon and around Ophel, and the captains he sets in Judah's fenced cities belong to Chronicles alone; Kings never mentions them. The building project reads as the reform's practical half, a king strengthening the kingdom he had nearly lost to Assyria rather than only restoring worship. Adam Clarke reads the wall as repair of a breach the Assyrians themselves had made.

2 Chronicles 33:15-16

The strange gods and the carved idol come out of the house of the Lord, and the altars he raised there and across Jerusalem are thrown out of the city, undoing verses 4 through 7 one by one. He repairs the altar of the Lord and offers peace offerings and thank offerings, then commands Judah to serve the Lord God of Israel, the king now using his authority for the opposite end. None of this reform appears in 2 Kings 21, which ends Manasseh's account with the doom oracle and says nothing more of him.

2 Chronicles 33:17

The reform has a ceiling verse 17 states plainly: the people still sacrificed in the high places, though only to the Lord their God and not to the idols Manasseh had thrown down. The same gap appears in Jehoshaphat's reign, where 17:6 says he took the high places away and 20:33 says the people's hearts were not yet prepared for their full removal; a king's decree and a people's habit move at different speeds. Manasseh's own reform, coming after decades of the opposite example, could unmake the idols but not the custom in one stroke.

2 Chronicles 33:18-20

Chronicles names its own sources here, the book of the kings of Israel and the sayings of the seers, a record Matthew Henry reads as drawn from Manasseh's own confession once God gave him repentance. 2 Kings 21:18 buries Manasseh in the garden of his own house, the garden of Uzza; Chronicles keeps only in his own house, the shorter form standing beside the fuller one without conflict. Amon his son succeeds him, and the chapter turns at once to measure the son against the father it has just finished redeeming.

2 Chronicles 33:21-23

Amon's short two year reign parallels 2 Kings 21:19-26, but verse 23 gives Chronicles' own sentence, found nowhere in Kings: he humbled not himself before the Lord, as Manasseh his father had humbled himself. The father's chapter just spent three verses on that humbling, so the comparison lands with its full weight already built. Amon sacrifices to the very carved images Manasseh had made and thrown out, keeping his father's sin and refusing his father's repentance in the same breath, and Matthew Henry reads the pairing as proof that impenitence, not the sin itself, is what finally ruins a man.

2 Chronicles 33:24-25

Amon's own servants conspire and slay him in his own house, a plot the people of the land answer by killing the conspirators rather than joining them, and they make Josiah his son king in his stead. The parallel account stands at 2 Kings 21:23-24 in nearly the same words; Chronicles adds nothing new to the assassination itself and moves straight past it to the reign that will find the book of the law and reform the temple. The chapter that opened with the worst sins of any king of Judah closes by handing the throne forward to the son who will undo them.
