Amon’s two-year reign parallels 2 Kings 21:19-26. Verse 23 is Chronicles’ own sentence: “he did not humble himself before the LORD as his father Manasseh had done”. Amon sacrifices to “all the idols that his father Manasseh had made”, keeping his father’s sin while refusing his father’s repentance.

Matthew Henry notes that Manasseh had thrown the carved images out of the city without burning them, as Deuteronomy 7:25 required. Amon knew where they lay and set them up again. The cleansing left the idols within reach.
