1 Samuel 19:1-2

Saul had already tried the javelin twice in private; here the order goes out openly, to his own son and to every servant in the house. Jonathan's love for David works against the command from its first word, and his warning to hide until morning is the first time in the book that son and father openly divide over David. The plan Jonathan proposes, to speak for David in the field where Saul can be watched, opens the chapter's first move toward a reconciliation that will not hold for long.

1 Samuel 19:3-5

Jonathan's speech to Saul rests on two arguments, David's innocence and his service to the throne, and Saul is still reachable by reasoned appeal at this stage of his decline. Verse 5 recalls Goliath in substance without naming him, the great salvation the Lord wrought for all Israel through David's hand, so Jonathan turns his father's own memory against the order to kill. The plea works on Saul for the moment, though nothing in his record with broken vows suggests it will hold for long.

1 Samuel 19:6-7

Saul swears by the Lord's own name that David will not die, and for one scene David returns to court as in times past, playing before the king as he had at the start. The oath is sworn on God's life, and the narrator does not soften what happens to it within this same chapter. Wesley reads the moment, following Henry, as God turning Saul's heart through Jonathan's voice for this hour, though the mercy proves as short as Saul's memory.

1 Samuel 19:8-10

David's victory renews Saul's jealousy exactly as it had at 18:6 to 9, and the evil spirit from the Lord returns upon him in verse 9, the same phrasing used at 16:14 and 18:10, which the exposition does not soften. Readers differ on whether the phrase names a judicial abandonment or a permitted affliction, and both readings are held by writers on the bench. The javelin flies at David a third time here, always aimed at the one man playing music to calm the king, and he slips away while the spear finds only the wall. Saul's own hand has now failed twice against David within two chapters, and what follows next turns from the king's arm to messengers sent to finish it instead.

1 Samuel 19:11-13

Saul now moves from his own hand to a cordon of messengers watching David's house through the night, meaning to take him the moment he steps outside in the morning. Michal, Saul's own daughter, warns her husband and lets him down through a window, a rescue the older commentators compare to Rahab lowering the spies at Jericho. In David's place she lays an image, the teraphim, on the bed with a pillow of goats' hair for its head. The text never says why a household image was under this roof at all, and the readings run from an ordinary object kept without David's knowledge to Michal's own private use, with Gill noting plainly that David would not have allowed it in his house had he known.

1 Samuel 19:14-15

Michal's lie buys another day, and Saul's answer in verse 15 shows how far the pursuit has run: bring him up to me in the bed, that I may slay him, ordering a sick man killed where he lies rather than risk his recovering to escape again. The command exposes the kill order for what it always was, a private hatred rather than justice against a rebel, one that will not wait for due order. Henry calls it base to hunt a man believed dying by nature's own hand, and worse still to demand the body as proof.

1 Samuel 19:16-17

The messengers open the bed to find the teraphim rather than the man, and the device Michal built at verse 13 finally serves its purpose in front of Saul's own men. Saul turns on his daughter for deceiving him, and Michal answers with a second lie, that David threatened her own life if she would not help him escape. Barnes reads her line as self protection rather than truth, a wife choosing the story that turns her father's anger away from herself and onto an absent man.

1 Samuel 19:18-19

David runs not to another army or another king but to Samuel, the prophet who anointed him in secret at chapter 16, and the two of them settle at Naioth, a name meaning dwellings, among the company of prophets Samuel oversees. This is the same school first named at 10:5 and 10:10, when the Spirit fell on Saul at the very start of his reign, so the narrative sends the fleeing king to the place where the first king's story with prophecy began. Word reaches Saul quickly that David has found this shelter, and the chapter turns from messengers of murder to what waits for them at Naioth.

1 Samuel 19:20-21

Three separate companies of messengers arrive meaning to seize David, and each in turn is overtaken by the Spirit of God and joins the prophets instead of making an arrest. The text states it plainly and repeats it three times without explanation, because the repetition itself is the argument: no ordinary resistance stops Saul, so God stops him through the very office he most wants turned against David. Clarke reads the outcome as the point rather than the mechanism, that the men were kept from seizing David by a power stronger than their orders.

1 Samuel 19:22-24

Saul finally goes himself, and the same Spirit of God falls on him before he even reaches Naioth, so that he prophesies the whole way from the well at Sechu. He strips off his upper garments and lies prophesying before Samuel a full day and night, disabled from the one thing he came to do. This is the second time the saying is asked in this book, is Saul also among the prophets, first at 10:11-12 when the Spirit made him a new man fit to be king, now closing the same question over a man the Spirit only stops rather than remakes. Wesley reads the collapse as God's own ordering of the hour, so that David has room in it to slip away for good.
