Moses brought their case before the LORD

on Numbers 27:5-6

Moses has no law for this case, as with the defiled men at 9:6-8 and the sabbath-breaker at 15:32-36. Numbers 9:8 gives the shape of all three: "Wait here until I find out what the LORD commands concerning you".

Matthew Henry explains why Moses did not rule himself: 26:53 told him to divide the land among those counted, and only men were counted. John Calvin adds that the question had arguments on both sides. Henry notes that God attends to single families as well as nations.
