This site's exposition

These were the descendants of Manasseh

on Numbers 26:29-34

Manasseh's roll reaches Hepher and Zelophehad, then records five daughters a muster of men who "can serve in the army" had no need of. In chapter 27 they ask a share of the inheritance this census is taken to divide.

This site's exposition

the Shechemite clan from Shechem

Asriel and Shechem continue the clans of Gilead. John Wesley explains that the share falling to a tribe by lot was then given to its families in proportion to their numbers. A clan name in this roll was therefore a title to land.
