Manasseh's roll reaches Hepher and Zelophehad, then records five daughters a muster of men who "can serve in the army" had no need of. In chapter 27 they ask a share of the inheritance this census is taken to divide.

Manasseh has grown from 32,200 to 52,700, a gain of 20,500 and the largest of any tribe. John Wesley ties the rise to the words of Jacob over Joseph at Genesis 49:22. Matthew Henry notes the reversal: the smallest tribe at Sinai is now among the largest.
