A second list of course heads follows, now serving "In the days of Joiakim," the second generation after the return. Several of these names recur among the sealers of the covenant in chapter 10. The priesthood renews itself by father's house, name matched to name and course to course.

of Ezra, Meshullam
Ezra here is a priestly house from Zerubbabel's return at 12:1, and in Joiakim's day Meshullam heads it. That house was already serving before Ezra the scribe arrived under Artaxerxes at Ezra 8:1. The book knows more than one Ezra.
