The second choir proceeds "to the left," and Nehemiah follows with half the people past sites chapter 3 named in the building (12:38). Both choirs meet in the house of God, and the circuit once walked in construction is walked in thanksgiving.

Gill places the thanksgiving choirs in the great court of the house of God, the one space large enough to hold them. Henry pictures the people walking on the ground, some inside the wall and some outside, to fix the mercy in their memory. Nehemiah and half the officials stood.

It also contained the temple which was hallowed by the manifestation of His presence, and anew set apart to His service. It was on these accounts that Jerusalem was called "the holy city," and by this public and solemn act of religious observance, after a long period of neglect and desecration, it was, as it were, restored to its rightful proprietor.
