Fat and blood are forbidden together under one penalty, to be cut off from his people. The fat of an animal found dead or mauled may be used for any other purpose, so the rule guards what belongs on the altar.

The fat of an animal found dead or torn by beasts may serve any other use, and eating it is still forbidden. John Wesley explains that the ban at Leviticus 22:8 applied only to the priests. So the people needed a separate word on the fat.
