Jeremiah 42:18

in Jeremiah 42

For this is what the LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel, says: ‘Just as My anger and wrath were poured out on the residents of Jerusalem, so will My wrath be poured out on you if you go to Egypt. You will become an object of cursing and horror, of vilification and disgrace, and you will never see this place again.’

ASV

For thus saith Jehovah of hosts, the God of Israel: As mine anger and my wrath hath been poured forth upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, so shall my wrath be poured forth upon you, when ye shall enter into Egypt; and ye shall be an execration, and an astonishment, and a curse, and a reproach; and ye shall see this place no more.

KJV

For thus saith the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel; As mine anger and my fury hath been poured forth upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem; so shall my fury be poured forth upon you, when ye shall enter into Egypt: and ye shall be an execration, and an astonishment, and a curse, and a reproach; and ye shall see this place no more.

When God's professing people mingle with infidels, and make their court to them, they lose their dignity and make themselves a reproach. That God knew their hypocrisy in their enquiries of him, and that when they asked what he would have them to do they were resolved to take their own way; and therefore the sentence which was before pronounced conditionally is made absolute.

on Jeremiah 42:13-18

If the remnant goes to Egypt, “the sword you fear will overtake you there.” Barnes notes sword, famine, and plague are the three judgments named throughout the book. As wrath was poured out on Jerusalem, it will be poured out on them, and they “will never see this place again.”

This site's exposition

Just as My anger and wrath were poured out

The wrath poured out on Jerusalem is the pattern for Egypt. Matthew Henry says the LORD knew their hypocrisy, so the sentence given before on a condition is now made absolute. A people who court unbelievers, he adds, become a disgrace.

They are charged with dissimulation in their asking what God's will was in this matter and disobedience when they were told what it was; and sentence is accordingly passed upon them,
