Commentary Critical and Explanatory on the Whole Bible (1871)
The charge against Jeremiah was that of uttering falsehood in Jehovah's name, an act punishable with death (De 18:20). His prophecy against the temple and city (Jer 26:11) might speciously be represented as contradicting God's own words (Ps 132:14).

Jeremiah is heard by “the priests and prophets and all the people” in the courtyard of the sermon in chapter 7. He said “this house will become like Shiloh and this city will be desolate and deserted,” heard as an attack on the temple itself.

The cry for his death rests on Deuteronomy 18:20, which sentenced a false prophet to die. Jamieson, Fausset and Brown note that his hearers could set his words against Psalm 132:14, where God chooses Zion as His home forever. The priests and prophets took his message as a lie.
